Nissan Takes on Top Gear

Many people around the world know Top Gear and more specifically, host Jeremy Clarkson as the go to source for everything automotive related. The show features reviews of vehicles that are well thought out, and much of the time, brutally honest. That's why we here at Passport Nissan have loved the show for years. If Clarkson doesn't like a specific vehicle, he'll make sure his voice is heard.

So, what happens when Clarkson reviews a class-changing vehicle like the Nissan LEAF EV? The brutal truth is heard... Or is it? Some are claiming that Clarkson may not have been entirely accurate in his review of the Nissan LEAF. We can take when Clarkson said that the LEAF is "boring." After all, that is merely a matter of opinion.

Rather, it was when Clarkson claimed that the LEAF's battery may not be as reliable as originally projected that has everyone confused. Nissan PR Chief, Tom Barnard complained that "inaccuracies" like this discredit the review, and we're honestly inclined to agree. "The presenters' suggestion that the Leaf battery would be scrap after three years is plain wrong," Barnard wrote.1

"Other than that part we actually quite liked the review. They said lots of good things about the Leaf. But other media - who love to hate Top Gear it seems - leapt on this and said we had been moaning about the whole feature. There's a reason we feel passionately about the Leaf," he wrote. "We feel we need to be first with EV technology, even if it means we have to take a few punches at the beginning."2

What do you think? Was Clarkson simply mistaken in his review? Or, was he trying to create some controversy for the sake of ratings? Many Top Gear viewers have a love-hate relationship with the host, but at the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact that the Nissan LEAF is one incredible and important vehicle.
