Nissan dives into human-powered mobility partnering with Red Bull Flugtag Nashville

Nissan today announced it has been named the exclusive automotive partner of the Red Bull Flugtag Nashville, which will be held September 23, 2017, in Nashville's Riverfront Park on the banks of the Cumberland River. The all-new 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport is designated as the official vehicle of the event and will be used onsite, along with other Nissan vehicles. Nissan's engagement at Flugtag – which means "flying day" in German – also includes vehicle displays and consumer activities to engage the crowd. Attendance at the Red Bull Flugtag Nashville is expected to be 80,000. More than 100 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world since 1992. more "Nissan is proud to be partnering with Red Bull and hosting this celebration of engineering and ingenuity in our hometown of Nashville," said Jeremy Tucker, Nissan's vice president, Marketing Communications and Media. "With our North American headquarters nearby, Nissan Stadium as a backdrop, and a team of employees creating its own Flugtag from the nearby Smyrna Assembly plant, Nissan had to be a part of the fun." For the Nashville Flugtag, 42 carefully selected teams will attempt to defy gravity from a 110-foot long, 24-foot high "flight deck." The current global Flugtag Flight record is 258 feet. Among the teams competing will be the entry from Nissan's vehicle assembly plant in Smyrna. Team members have been spending nights and weekends engineering its "Take On Flight"-themed entry. "The Nashville Flugtag is a great opportunity to showcase Nissan's creativity, engineering know-how and our tremendous American manufacturing presence. Just 30 miles outside of Nashville, the Smyrna operation is the highest volume vehicle assembly plant in North America and employs 8,400 people," said John Martin, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. The Nissan team is made up of a diverse group of 15 employees from around the Smyrna plant, brought together by a love of aviation and a sense of adventure. Of the larger group helping with construction, five will actually perform on the platform and "fly" into the Cumberland River. Headed by Manufacturing Line Director Shawn Williams and Product Quality Assurance Engineer Ben Myburgh, the team has been using its experience and engineering skills – and access to computer modeling software – analyzing every angle to make the "Take On Flight" Flugtag soar the farthest. Sticking closely to Red Bull Flugtag rules, the vehicle can't weigh more than 400 pounds, including the pilot, or have a wingspan longer than 22 feet. Building the top-secret entry has taken place in a borrowed hangar at Smyrna Airport. Though their days are spent building quality cars and trucks, the Nissan "Take On Flight" Flugtag team includes five licensed pilots, experienced aircraft builders and aviation enthusiasts. In addition to the actual flight, entrants are required to demonstrate a high level of showmanship, including a pre-launch skit. Leaving nothing to chance, team members will be taking dance lessons and learning to hang glide. "Of all the vehicles produced at Smyrna in the past 34 years, perhaps none has generated the excitement of our Flugtag flying machine," added Martin. "We're out to win it. Plus it is just good fun." First-of-its-kind Rear Door Alert technology from Nissan can help remind drivers to check their rear seats

With summer heat on the rise, potential issues posed by interior car temperatures are even more real, but Nissan hopes its new Rear Door Alert (RDA)1 may help reduce concerns. Elsa Foley, an industrial engineer and mother of two young children, and Marlene Mendoza, a mechanical engineer and mother of three, decided to work on an idea to help remind drivers to check their back seats before walking away. more "We pushed each other along and knew we were on the right track one morning when Marlene discovered she had left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of her car one night after coming home after a long day at the office," said Foley. "The worst thing was the car smelled for days, but it made me ask myself, 'what if that had been something else back there?'" After presenting their idea - with Mendoza eight months pregnant at the time - the project moved into full development at the Nissan Technical Center North America (NTCNA) in Farmington Hills, Mich. The new RDA feature will debut as standard equipment on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder SUV this coming September, and will be available on other Nissan models in the coming years. "There's a culture of innovation along with the Nissan Intelligent Mobility mission that really encourages employees around the world to seek out new ideas every day," said Mendoza. "We're thankful that we were able use our perspectives as moms, and our backgrounds as engineers, to bring forward an idea that is now going into production – providing drivers with a reminder to check their back seats." The new Rear Door Alert system can help remind Nissan owners to check the rear seat by using a series of distinctive honks as the driver is walking away from the vehicle. The audio alerts distinguish the Nissan RDA from other systems in the marketplace. "The Rear Door Alert uses a similar honking cue that has been proven successful with Nissan's Easy Fill Tire Alert," added Foley. "By drawing your attention back to the vehicle, once you've walked away, you are more likely to recheck the back seat than with a visual alert alone." How Rear Door Alert works RDA monitors the rear door switches to detect their open/closed status prior to and after a trip. If the system detects that a rear door was opened/closed prior to a trip, but then was not re-opened again after the trip was completed, given the vehicle was put in park and the ignition cycled off, the system responds with a series of notifications, starting with a display in the instrument panel and progressing to subtle but distinctive chirps of the horn. Because there are so many scenarios in which a driver might open a rear door—everything from throwing in a gym bag to cleaning the car—the RDA system is easily configurable and can be turned off temporarily or permanently through prompts in the cluster display. "The idea is if you open a rear door, whether to put a child or a package in the rear seat, the vehicle will help alert you when you get to your destination that you may want to check the rear seat," said Mendoza. "We've built in enough time that you don't have to rush, but if you don't open the rear door again when you get out of the vehicle, we want you to think for a moment about what you may have put in the back seat." Nissan offers technology for all Nissan has long been an innovator in developing advanced technologies under the banner of the Nissan Intelligent Safety Shield Technologies. The company recently announced that it is making Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)2 standard on a projected one million vehicles sold in the United States for model year 2018, including seven of the company's most popular models – Rogue/Rogue Sport, Altima, Murano, LEAF, Pathfinder, Maxima and Sentra (except manual transmission-equipped and all NISMO versions). Other available technologies include Intelligent Around View® Monitor (I-AVM), Intelligent Distance Control (I-DC), Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention (I-BSI), Intelligent Lane Intervention (I-LI) and Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA). In addition to the new Rear Door Alert and standard Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), the 2018 Pathfinder also includes six USB ports as standard, a new Midnight Edition appearance package and two new exterior colors: Scarlet Ember and Midnight Pine. Also, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)3 and NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Services are now standard on the Pathfinder SL grade (previously standard only on Platinum grade).

Nissan ProPILOT Assist™ technology reduces the hassle of stop-and-go highway driving, ready for U.S. launch

Earlier this week, for the first time on public roads in the U.S., Nissan put media behind the wheel to experience its ProPILOT Assist technology, which will be available to customers later this year. ProPILOT Assist reduces the hassle of stop-and-go driving by helping control acceleration, braking and steering during single-lane highway driving. The ProPILOT Assist system – revealed at Nissan Technical Center North America (NTCNA) in Michigan, tuned specifically for U.S. roads and drivers – underwent more than 50,000 miles of development on roads across the United States. ProPILOT Assist combines Steering Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control for use in both heavy and flowing traffic situations. It is a "hands-on" driver assist system rather than a "self-driving" feature. more Nissan ProPILOT Assist "Nissan is a technology pioneer and ProPILOT Assist sets a strong, consumer-focused foundation for fully autonomous vehicles of the future," said Takeshi Yamaguchi, senior vice president, Research and Development, Nissan Technical Center North America, Nissan North America, Inc. Nissan has plans to extend this technology to more models in Europe, Japan, China and the United States – with 10 models to be launched by 2020 by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. How ProPILOT Assist Works Tuned specifically for U.S. roads, ProPILOT Assist is designed to be more intuitive and user-friendly compared to other driver-assist technologies. It can potentially help lessen driver fatigue and create a more confident driving experience – especially for drivers who experience heavy highway traffic on a daily basis. ProPILOT Assist uses a forward-facing camera, forward-facing radar, sensors and electronic control module to help the driver stay in the center of the driving lane and to maintain vehicle speed (set by the driver) or help maintain a gap to the preceding vehicle if the vehicle speed drops below the driver-set speed. It also can slow the vehicle to a complete stop and holds the vehicle during traffic jam conditions. While providing steering assist, reducing the need for constant small steering adjustments, the driver's hands must be on the steering wheel at all times. Hands-on detection is provided by the system's steering torque sensor. If the driver only grips the steering system with a light touch, the warning system may activate, alerting the driver to apply more pressure or a tighter grip on the steering wheel. Steering assist is cancelled in inclement weather if the windshield wipers are in the low or high position (if lane lines can be detected, the system can remain active when the wipers are in the intermittent mode or if the mist function is activated). The driver's input always takes priority, overriding the system when the steering wheel is turned or the turn signal is operated (steering assistance goes into a temporary standby mode). The system also goes into temporary standby mode when the accelerator pedal is pressed. And, the system's Intelligent Cruise Control and lane keep assistance are both cancelled when the brakes are applied. "ProPILOT Assist has the ability to track curving lanes, helping the driver stay centered in the lane as well as adjusting for various traffic flow conditions," said Yamaguchi. "However, just as non-autonomous vehicles today, ProPILOT Assist requires the driver to remain engaged in the task of driving at all times – though the technology can reduce driver fatigue and increase driving enjoyment." About ProPILOT Assist Nissan's new ProPILOT Assist eases driver workload by reducing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under certain driving conditions. To activate the system, the driver simply pushes the blue ProPILOT Assist ON button, which is integrated into the right-side steering wheel spoke. Step two is to set the Intelligent Cruise Control when the desired speed is reached, as with a normal advanced cruise control system. When lane markers are consistently detected, steering assist engages and the steering wheel/lane marker icons on the instrument panel turn green. Both right and left hand markers need to be detected by the front camera. Steering assist will engage or disengage depending on the visibility or presence of lane markers, though the Intelligent Cruise Control will remain active. If the vehicle comes to a complete stop in a traffic jam situation for more than three seconds, the driver just presses the resume button or taps the accelerator pedal to begin moving again. "ProPILOT Assist functionally enhances the ICC system, including stop, hold and start, while the steering assist's lane centering helps keep the vehicle in the center of the lane," added Yamaguchi. "Drivers who have experienced ProPILOT Assist always remark about the difference it makes, not realizing how many acceleration, steering and braking inputs they make under normal driving – and how much more enjoyable it is to have ProPILOT Assist help take care of it for them."

Nissan Altima tops Midsize Car Segment, Murano tops Midsize SUV Segment in 2017 J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study

Nissan has made huge gains in its ownership and driving "appeal," as stated in the just-released J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM. The Nissan brand's rise of 27 points versus 2016 and jump of eight spots in overall ranking was fueled by top marks for Murano in the Midsize SUV category, Altima in the Midsize Car Segment and high marks for the Maxima and TITAN in their respective categories. The top-selling Rogue showed the most dramatic increase for the Nissan brand, with a 46-point improvement year-over-year, beating the Compact SUV segment average by 32 points and elevating Nissan to above-industry average in overall and non-premium brand rankings. The 2017 Murano crossover scored an 837 (on a 1,000 point scale), eight points above its next competitor, while the Altima sedan's 826 put it two points ahead of the next car. Maxima improved by 9 points – to 866 – resulting in a second-place spot in the Large Car segment, and TITAN finished second in Large Light Duty Pickup. more The annual APEAL Study, now in its 22nd year, surveys purchasers and lessees of new vehicles, giving owners a platform to evaluate their cars, trucks and SUVs across 77 specific attributes. The results are combined into an overall APEAL score measured on a 1,000-point scale. The study has found that the average APEAL score for the non-premium (mass market) segment has dramatically improved year over year, while the premium segment has remained relatively unchanged.
