Nissan Maxima: 40 years a flagship A new Maxima 40th Anniversary Edition joins the 2021 Nissan Maxima lineup when it goes on sale this fall. As the flagship of Nissan’s vibrant sedan lineup, which includes the trio of recently redesigned Altima, Sentra and Versa models, Maxima continues to garner prestigious industry awards. In June, Maxima was named the top vehicle in the Large Car segment of J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for the third consecutive year. In July, Maxima led J.D. Power’s APEAL Study Large Car category, again for the third year in a row and 30 points ahead of the segment average. It has also achieved a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for five straight years1. In addition to the 40th Anniversary Edition, the 2021 Maxima will be offered in SV, SR and Platinum grade levels – each equipped with a 300-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine and Xtronic transmission. The Original "4-Door Sports Car" Today, Maxima is known for its premium level of luxury with performance and sportiness. For generations, before the arrival of diamond quilted Ascot leather-appointed seats, Satin Birdseye Maple wood finishers and 11-speaker Bose® Premium Audio system, it was simply known as the “4-Door Sports Car.” Now in its eighth-generation, Maxima’s storied history as an authentic sports sedan goes back even farther to the Datsun Bluebird 810 of the late 1970s. The 1981 Datsun 810 – often described as a larger interpretation of the legendary Datsun 510 – was the first to carry the Maxima nameplate. Dropping the 810 name, the true first generation Maxima featured the engine of the 240Z and a 5-speed manual transmission at a time when industry standard was a 4-speed box or less. Next came the second-generation 1985 – 1988 Maxima, which was the first to offer a V6 engine and front-wheel drive. It was the last to be available with a station wagon body. The third-generation Maxima emerged in 1989 as the true 4DSC. Considered the best affordable sedan in the world by many, it was powered by a 160-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 and went head-to-head against European sports sedans in road test comparisons by leading automotive publications. Not willing to rest on its laurels, the Nissan engineering team came back in 1995 with a larger body design and featuring a new engine, new rear suspension and 30 extra horsepower (190-hp). It was chosen as Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year and was included on Car and Driver’s 10 Best list. Three more generations followed quickly. The fifth-generation Maxima, introduced in 2000, received the legendary VQ35 V6 and a boost to 255-horsepower (from model year 2002). In 2004, the sixth-generation Maxima upped the luxury factor substantially. The seventh-generation added new aggressive styling to go along with the now-290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. In 2016, the current-generation Maxima debuted sporting the V-Motion front end and floating roof design. A minor facelift followed in 2019 with enhancements to its safety, security and connectivity technology. Over four decades, Maxima has remained faithful to its heritage as a true performance sedan and brand flagship – as well as to its large owner base, which is among the most loyal among all Nissan models. With the addition of the special 40th Anniversary Edition, Maxima adds to its long history once again. Nissan has unveiled the Z Proto, signalling the company's intent to launch a new generation of the legendary Z sports car. Shown at an event beamed around the world from the Nissan Pavilion in Yokohama, Japan, the prototype features new design inside and out, as well as an upgraded powertrain with a manual transmission. In Franklin, just south of Nashville, hundreds of Z owners and enthusiasts watched the Z Proto's Yokohama debut on big screens from their vehicles in a socially distanced event– part of a weeklong schedule of activities during the 33rd annual International Z Convention (ZCON). more First hinted at in a brand teaser video, "Nissan A-Z," shown in May, the Nissan Z Proto pays full respect to 50 years of Z heritage. At the same time, it's a thoroughly modern sports car. "The Z represents the joy of driving in its purest form and has helped shape Nissan's DNA as a passionate, innovative challenger," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. "Ever since the first generation, it has captured the hearts of car enthusiasts all over the world. That's why we're so excited today to be able to say to them: Yes, the next one is coming!" Z Proto is one of 10 new vehicles that Nissan is showing for the U.S. in 20 months, along with top-sellers like Sentra and Rogue, and innovative new models like the all-electric Ariya crossover. "The United States is home to one of the most devoted and enthusiastic Z communities in the world, with nearly 1.35 million total sales over the model's 50-year history," said Mike Colleran, senior vice president, Nissan U.S. Marketing and Sales. "With new models like Sentra and Rogue opening new eyes to our brand, Z Proto is our loudest statement yet that Nissan will continue to bring vehicles that thrill to U.S. showrooms." Z Proto exterior: past meets future Sporting a bright yellow pearlescent paint – a tribute to a popular paint scheme on both the first-generation 240Z and the 300ZX – the Z Proto boasts a fresh, attractive exterior design with a silhouette that communicates respect to the original model. Using a theme that combines elements of previous generations while also projecting futurism was challenging, said Alfonso Albaisa, head of design at Nissan. "Our designers made countless studies and sketches as we researched each generation and what made them a success," Albaisa said. "Ultimately, we decided the Z Proto should travel between the decades, including the future." The shape of the hood and the canted, teardrop-shaped LED headlights are both unmistakable reminders of the original Z. The rectangular grille dimensions are similar to the current model, although the grille fins nod to the past. The form continues to exude both sportiness and elegance. "The LED headlights have two half-circles that hark back to the Japan market-only 240ZG of the 70s," Albaisa explained. "The ZG has clear dome lenses over the headlight buckets, which under light give off two circular reflections over each headlight. We liked that unique characteristic and discovered that it naturally fit with the Z's identity." The link to the original Z is most striking when viewing the Z Proto from the side. The roofline flows from the nose to the squared-off rear to create a distinctive first-generation Z profile whose rear edge was slightly lower than the front fender height giving the Z its unique posture. The signature transition from the rear quarter glass to the low-slung position of the rear tail adds to the effect. The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world. Set within a rectangular black section that runs across the rear and wraps around the outer edges, the LED taillights convey a sharp glow. Lightweight carbon fiber treatments on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear valance ensure nimble performance. 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts complete the Z Proto's striking road presence. Z Proto interior: modern tech with a vintage touch Designed to fit driver and passenger like a glove, the Z Proto's cabin seamlessly blends modern technology with vintage Z touches. The interior design team sought advice from professional motorsports legends to give the Z Proto an ideal sports car cabin, both for road and track. This can be seen in the Z's instrumentation. All vital information is found in the 12.3-inch digital meter display and arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as the redline shift point at the twelve o-clock position. The new, deep dish steering wheel offers the driver quick access controls without losing its vintage aesthetic. Yellow accents are found throughout the cabin, including stitching on the instrument panel. The seats feature special accent piping and layered seat material to create depth. Sports car joy: an exhilarating, dynamic performer The original Z was built to bring the joy and excitement of sports car ownership to as many people as possible. "The Z has always been a strong dynamic performer, making it easy for customers to enjoy its capabilities and feel as connected as possible to the car," said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist of the Z Proto. "This has been true through all its generations, and this is what drives our passion to innovate and challenge the norm." Each new generation had a more powerful engine, although the Z is about more than power increases. "Z is more than just powerful and agile," Tamura continued. "It is designed to create a connection with the driver, for the car to be a 'dance partner' for their on-road adventures." Make no mistake though, the Z Proto packs a powerful punch. Under the elongated hood is an enhanced V6 twin-turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. As a prototype, work is now underway to synchronize the power with the grace and control that has defined the Z for the past 50 years. "Nissan is transforming its business," said Uchida. "This summer, we unveiled the ground breaking all-electric Nissan Ariya crossover, which represents the future of mobility. Even as we open this new chapter, the Z, its heritage and passion, express who we are and has been shaping our DNA for over fifty years."

Join Nissan in celebration of National Dog Day on Aug. 26 with a pledge to help keep your pets safe when traveling by car. In a recent study1, Nissan found that due to COVID-19, 71 percent of consumers are more comfortable traveling by car than airplane this summer. The pandemic has also seen a rise in pet adoptions. According to Rover.com, more than 60 percent of recent adoptions are by those with little or no previous pet experience. Among the list of firsts for new owners is how to travel safely in the car with their animal. Out of convenience, many owners may allow their dogs to sit in the back seat or place them in the cargo area of their vehicle unrestrained. The American Automobile Association recently reported that 84 percent of Americans have driven with their pet in the car, yet only 16 percent use any form of restraint. In the same study, one in six admitted to driving with a dog on their lap. more "Often drivers may hit the road and just have their pet jump in the back seat for the ride. For a small investment and an extra minute or two, you can take steps to help ensure your pet is secured in the car," said Brandon Sanders, product safety expert, Nissan North America. "An unrestrained pet can be a distraction and also poses a greater risk of injury to human occupants." Tips to properly secure a pet in your car: Buckle up: One recommended way to secure a pet is to use a chest-style harness in the rear seating position. Run a seat belt through a loop on the back of the pet harness, or under the back or the harness itself. Always consult the pet harness information manual for instruction on proper vehicle use. This is an excellent solution to ensure that medium- to large-size dogs stay seated during a trip. Use a tether: Another option is using a pet restraint tether, often referred to as a pet seat belt. This type of restraint offers an inexpensive and quick solution for securing pets. As the name implies, this restraint clips to the pet's collar or harness and is often affixed to your vehicle by either clipping into the seatbelt buckle or child-seat anchor to help keep your dog from moving around the vehicle. Crates and carriers: Utilizing a secured pet carrier or kennel is another way to travel safely with pets. Smaller dogs can be housed in portable-style carrier that can be secured in the vehicle's second row using seat belts or pillows to help limit movement. Smaller carriers can also be placed on the floor behind one of the front seats. Medium and large-sized pets should be placed in a sturdier kennel secured to the vehicle cargo area in SUVs or trucks. In either instance, the kennel should be fastened to the vehicle as securely as possible. Set boundaries: Cargo area dividers can be used to help keep pets behind the last row of an SUV. These are a great way to keep large dogs out of the occupant space when traveling. It's best to still secure the pet in the cargo area. Remember that a vehicle can also offer built-in convenience for pet travel.
