Nissan and Google announce a technology partnership to embed the Android operating system in vehicles

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Google today announced a technology partnership to embed the Android operating system in vehicles sold by the world's leading automotive alliance, providing intelligent infotainment and customer focused-applications across multiple models and brands, scheduled to start in 2021. Under the technology partnership, vehicles sold by the Alliance members in many markets will utilize Android, the world's most popular operating system, and will provide turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps, access to a rich ecosystem of automotive apps on the Google Play Store and have the ability to answer calls and texts, control media, find information, and manage vehicle functions with voice using the built in Google Assistant. more The Alliance, whose member companies last year sold 10.6 million vehicles in 200 markets, will integrate Google applications and services into infotainment and cloud-based systems to enhance the experience for customers of Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors brands. While a range of Alliance vehicles will share the Android platform, each brand will have flexibility to create a unique customer interface and specific features on top of the common Android platform. The infotainment partnership forms part of Alliance moves to equip more vehicles with connectivity and cloud-based services as part of its Alliance 2022 mid-term plan. Today's announcement, coinciding with the first anniversary of the mid-term plan, symbolizes the Alliance focus on next-generation technology. Under the plan, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi is targeting increased sales of more than 14 million units a year by the end of 2022. The plan also involves the launch of 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles, new autonomous-driving technologies and the ongoing rollout of the Alliance Intelligent Cloud. The Alliance Intelligent Cloud will provide next-generation infotainment systems with secure connectivity by offering a platform to integrate data management, infotainment systems and to facilitate over-the- air upgrades and remote diagnostics in Alliance member-company vehicles. By combining the latest technologies from the Alliance and Google, the Alliance member companies' vehicles will have one of the most intelligent infotainment systems in the market. Drivers and passengers will be able to leverage Google and Android's capabilities to access an ecosystem that includes thousands of existing applications and an ever-expanding array of new apps. This integration, combined with the broad knowledge and a vibrant community of developers, will enable easy in-vehicle access to popular applications. The system will also be compatible with devices running other operating systems, such as Apple iOS. Hadi Zablit, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, said, "Our partnership with Google will offer owners of our vehicles rich user experiences that are currently available only outside the vehicle or, to a limited extent, by connecting an Android device to supported vehicles. We are building powerful connected and seamless on-board / off-board experiences into our vehicles in addition to the features of Google applications and services that many users are accustomed to, including Google Maps, the Google Assistant and the Google Play Store." Kal Mos, Global Vice President of Alliance Connected Vehicles at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, added, "With the integration of the Android platform into our infotainment systems, we are adding a new level of intelligence to our connected vehicles. In the future, the Google Assistant, which employs Google's leading AI technology, can become the main way customers interact with their vehicles, hands-free. With Google Maps and the Google Assistant embedded in Alliance infotainment systems, our customers will have some of the most advanced AI based applications at their fingertips. And with in-vehicle access to the Google Play Store, our customers will enjoy an open and secure ecosystem of Android apps engineered for vehicles." Hiroshi Lockheimer, Senior Vice President of Platforms & Ecosystems at Google, said, "Google and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi share a common vision of delivering an intelligent, safe and seamless in-car experience with apps and services that are familiar, upgradable and connected. We're thrilled to partner with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi to bring the Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other popular apps via the Play Store and Android to drivers and passengers around the world."

Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision to bring ‘Safety Shield 360’ to top-selling models, representing more than 1 million vehicles annually

Nissan is introducing Safety Shield 360, a suite of six advanced active safety and driver-assist technologies, as standard equipment on all of its top-selling models by 2021, representing more than one million vehicles annually. "Our philosophy is to bring Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies to market in our most popular and affordable vehicles," said Denis Le Vot, chairman, Nissan North America. "Safety Shield 360 combines six advanced systems to give models like Altima and Rogue a class-leading package of technologies that can improve safety and the overall driving experience for Nissan owners." According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cross traffic alert reduces crashes by 22 percent; the combination of rearview cameras and sensors reduces crashes by 42 percent; and adding rear emergency braking reduces backing crashes by 78 percent compared with vehicles with none of these features. Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes front, side and rear sensing technologies - will first be introduced as standard equipment on SV and SL grades of the upcoming 2019 Rogue, 2019 Rogue Sport and the all-new 2019 Altima, which all go on sale at Nissan dealers in fall 2018. more Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite includes six key advanced systems: Front • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection1 – uses forward-facing radar and camera technology to track vehicles and crossing pedestrians, can give audible and visual warnings and apply braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of frontal collisions • Lane Departure Warning4 – alerts driver of drifting from lane with a visual warning and audible or haptic signals • High Beam Assist – automatically switches to low beam headlights when it detects a vehicle ahead and turns the high beams back on when needed Side • Blind Spot Warning2 – helps spot vehicles in driver's blind spot areas • Rear Cross Traffic Alert3 – can warn the driver about detected approaching vehicles when reversing out of a parking spot Rear • Rear Automatic Braking5 – helps the driver detect stationary objects when backing up and, if necessary, applies the brakes to help avoid a collision Other Key Nissan Intelligent Mobility Features Safety Shield 360 is the latest development of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company's vision for changing how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society. Another key component of Nissan Intelligent Mobility is ProPILOT Assist6, which will be available on the all-new 2019 Altima. ProPILOT Assist eases driver workload by reducing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under certain driving conditions, during single-lane highway driving. ProPILOT Assist is the foundation for automated vehicles of the future, helping drivers stay centered in the lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead. Currently, Nissan offers ProPILOT Assist on the 2018 Rogue and the all-electric 2018 LEAF.

Nissan's "Heisman House" campaign enters eighth year with a star-studded lineup

Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma, 2017), Bo Jackson (Auburn, 1985) and Gino Torretta (Miami, 1992) are the three newest recruits to the 2018 Nissan Heisman House, a fictional fraternity that provides fans a glimpse of what it might be like if the winners of college football's highest individual honor lived together under one roof. Now in its eighth year, the 2018 Nissan Heisman House campaign features 10 Heisman Trophy winners in a series of TV spots airing on ESPN beginning Aug. 30 and running throughout the college football season. The season's opening spot, "Calling All Heismans," premieres tonight during the college football season opener, Purdue vs. Northwestern, 8:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN. more "The Heisman House campaign has proven to be a tremendous opportunity for Nissan to creatively feature our robust vehicle lineup and innovative technology in front of the massive audience that is college football fans," said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, marketing communications and media, Nissan North America, Inc. "This year, with a strong ad focus on Nissan Intelligent Mobility and our TITAN pickup – featuring America's Best Truck Warranty1 – we're taking the campaign to new heights with one of our most star-studded casts ever." Returning Heisman House members are Herschel Walker (Georgia, 1982), Mike Rozier (Nebraska, 1983), Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988), Charles Woodson (Michigan, 1997), Tim Tebow (Florida, 2007), Marcus Mariota (Oregon, 2014) and Derrick Henry (Alabama, 2015). This year's campaign includes seven 45-second spots and five 15-second spots featuring the all-new 2019 Nissan Altima, GT-R, all-new Kicks, Rogue and Nissan TITAN. Nissan Intelligent Mobility is also a major focus of this year's campaign. Highlights include: Calling All Heismans (45 seconds, to debut on Aug. 30): Charles Woodson leads the charge in "Calling All Heismans" to this year's campaign. Baker Mayfield Sandwich (15 seconds, to debut in Sept.): Baker Mayfield plants a flag to claim his food in the Heisman House kitchen. BOard Games (15 seconds, to debut in Oct.): Bo Jackson's all-around skills are put to the test in the world of board games. Is there any game he can't master? Something for Everyone: GIFs, fan votes, giveaways and the Heisman Mobile Tour New this season, animated GIFs of each Heisman winner have been created to be easily shared socially and via text message. Fans can download them at NissanHeismanHouse.com. For the 12th straight year, Nissan will provide college football fans the opportunity to vote for their favorite Heisman Trophy candidates. Nissan's fan vote – the voice of the public – is cast along with other Heisman voters from sports journalists and previous Heisman winners. This year, fans can vote through Twitter or at NissanHeismanHouse.com via their mobile devices. "The fan vote is something Nissan is particularly proud of because it gives fans a voice in a space that otherwise is completely closed to the public," added Tucker. "And via this vote, fans have proven to know their college football – the fan vote winner has gone on to win the Heisman Trophy in 10 of the 11 years of its existence." Nissan also announced two sweepstakes (click here for official rules) to complement the 2018 Heisman House campaign, including one that offers a chance for a member of the public to win two tickets to attend the exclusive Heisman Trophy Award Ceremony in New York on Dec. 8 – the only way in which to do so. Fans also can enter to win a customized Nissan TITAN. Last year, nearly 1-million consumers used the configurator on NissanUSA.com to customize a TITAN in their favorite school colors. As in previous years, the Nissan Heisman House Tour, featuring a simulated Heisman House, will travel to different college campuses throughout the U.S. The Tour provides fans an opportunity to enjoy the Heisman House living room, take photos with the trophy, and meet Heisman Trophy winners as well as ESPN on-air talent. The tour's first stop is South Bend, Ind., for the Michigan vs. Notre Dame matchup Saturday, Sept. 1. Former running back Ricky Watters, a member of Notre Dame's 1988 national championship team, will appear from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. EDT, participating in both a chalk talk session with ESPN anchor Neil Everett and an autograph session with fans. 1987 Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Brown, who became the seventh player from Notre Dame to win the Heisman Trophy, will then appear from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. EDT., participating in both a chalk talk session with Everett and an autograph session with fans. Fans can follow all things Nissan Heisman House throughout the season via the online platform, NissanHeismanHouse.com. For information on the entire Nissan lineup, visit NissanNews.com.
